Risk has returned to the centre of contemporary societies, and their imaginations as well, at once multifarious, feared, and sometimes extolled.
This session of Poésie Plate-forme , “Risking”, at the intersection of practices, will feature a conversation—in these very peculiar times—between sociologist and anthropologist Philippe Liotard, who explores innovative body changes, and artist Abraham Poincheval, known for his norm-defying performances and sculptures.
Philippe Liotard is an anthropologist and sociologist specialising in sport. He is a lecturer at Lyon 1. His fields of research range from the education and socialisation of the body to contemporary changes in appearance (piercing, tattooing, implants…). He makes scientific contributions and speaks in academic, institutional and professional contexts, also with the aim of understanding different kinds of vulnerability, violence, gender and discrimination.
Abraham Poincheval’s work humorously explores the practices of performance and sculpture, subjecting his own body to extreme experiments. Whether crossing the Alps pushing a capsule that serves as a shelter, or enclosing himself in a boulder for a week, his itinerant or static expeditions require a total commitment of the body. His works and performances are regularly the subject of exhibitions and invitations in France and abroad.
