Le temps suspendu Book launch

Thursday 12 January 2017 at 7 pm

Le temps suspendu conducted by Giovanni Careri and Bernhard Rüdiger, 2016, 336 p. color – 18,5 x 24 cm – 26 € available since November 21th

The product of a research project by the ACTH group (Art Contemporain et Temps de l’Histoire) to which artists and art historians have been contributing since 2004, along with an accompanying exhibition at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, this book brings a new artistic and theoretical approach to bear on a group of films and art works. It breathes new life into art history thinking, positing the perhaps unusual view that images themselves think, and that their connections cause a view of historical time and its traumas to emerge. The work presents a collection of contributions drawn together on the basis of images called “tables” in a kind of mapping exercise. With no direct connection between them, works nevertheless start to resonate with each other depending on the route taken, defying expectations – hence Courbet’s The Wave rubs shoulders with Michael Snow’s La Région Centrale.

Echoing these visual montages, the work brings together original contributions from critics and historians, as well as from several artists. This book-object is a visual and intellectual proposition, a genuine space for exhibition and circulation prompted by the thoughts of the works themselves.

Giovanni Careri is an art historian. Director of Studies at EHESS, he also teaches at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Lyon. He has recently published a book on Caravaggio, Caravage: la peinture en ses miroirs (Citadelle & Mazenod, 2015); with Georges Didi-Huberman: L’Histoire de l’Art Depuis Walter Benjamin (Milan, 2015); La Torpeur des Ancêtres: Juifs et Chrétiens dans la Chapelle Sixtine (EHESS, 2013); and, with Bernhard Rüdiger, Face au Réel: Ethique de la Forme dans l’Art Contemporain (Archibook, EHESS, ENBA Lyon, 2008).

Bernhard Rüdiger is an artist and a teacher at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Lyon. His installation work has been exhibited in several international art museums and galleries. A monograph on his work with a group of artists from Milan between 1986 and 1994 has been recently published under the title A Choral Archive: The Via Lazzaro Palazzi Space, the Experience of Self-Management and AVANBLOB (Ennesima, Mousse Publishing, 2015).
