Eric Giraudet de Boudemange et Yan Wagner

Monday 27 February 2017 at 7 pm

This third session of the sixth season of Partitions (Performances) [(Performance) Scores] presents two duos that play on and with alternative knowledge and the ways in which it is circulated.

In Le prix du Pif, alliicceelleessccaannnnee&ssoonniiaaddeerrzzyyppoollsskkii rewrite the market rules for the “Que Sais-Je” collection, whose original philosophy aimed at an encyclopedia of calibrated knowledge that would be standardized in terms of number of words and price. In the performances by Eric Giraudet de Boudemange and Yan Wagner, language-learning experiments conducted on apes intersect with representations of the “savage” man.

“The ‘Pif’ is an envelope containing a brochure, a gadget and a book from the ‘Que sais-je ?’ collection. What makes this edition distinctive is that its price varies, from a few dozen to a few hundred thousand euros, and this entirely depends on which ‘Que sais-je ?’ has been placed inside the wallet.
As a buyer, you feel swindled. As a modern individual, you cannot accept the absolutely discretionary way these prices are determined. You feel like you have been cheated by contemporary artists once again. Your reaction is normal. And even: your reaction is a sane one.
But the cost of each Pif was not determined randomly, so we are going to hold a lecture to explain these prices. In forty minutes, you will learn how the publisher Presses Universitaires de France goes about setting the prices of the books in the ‘Que sais-je ?’ collection, and the alternative method we adopted to determine the price of the Pif.”

aalliicceelleessccaannnnee&ssoonniiaaddeerrzzyyppoollsskkii is a duo of artists trained at Paris’s Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-arts who explore the superimposed fields of visual arts and live performance. They have presented their work at the 2013 Biennale de Lyon, at FIAC, at the Palais de Tokyo and at the Centre Pompidou. They are currently associate artists at the 104 in Paris.

Eric Giraudet de Boudemange and Yan Wagner / That Speechless Green Man Inside a Cyborg
“That Speechless Green Man Inside a Cyborg is the fruit of a collaboration between Eric Giraudet de Boudemange and Yan Wagner on an eponymous video presented at the beginning of the year at Rinomina. It is a semiotic game that mixes references to language experiments carried out on apes with the figure of the ‘savage’ man, who haunts European folklore. During solstice rituals, the ‘hairy’ Pilosus, often armed with a club, transcends the link between civilized humanity and savage elvish spirits, in the style of Kanzi the bonobo, the contemporary voice of our inner world, at the dawn of consciousness and speech.”

Artist Eric Giraudet de Boudemange was born in Boulogne Billancourt in 1983. After attending the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts, and then Le Fresnoy – Studio national des arts contemporains, the artist completed his studies in 2014 at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. In Paris, he recently presented two performances at the Centre Pompidou and a solo exhibition at Rinomina.
