Berger & Berger La nuit est plus sombre avant l'aube

Alexandra Fau will give a talk presenting Berger & Berger and their book La nuit est plus sombre avant l’aube.
The agency Berger & Berger was co-founded by brothers Cyrille Berger, an architect, and Laurent P. Berger, an artist. Together they have developed an ongoing dialogue between art and architecture, exploring man’s relationship to space and the environment.
As successive ecological crises force us to rethink and reinvent new ways of being in the world, the “age of construction” seems to belong firmly in the past. The Bergers acknowledge this in the discretion of their practice and the humility of their quintessential creative acts, both in the fields of art and in the way they respond to building projects.
Their work tends to nestle into its surroundings, underscoring the need to build bridges between the concepts of nature and culture. In response to man’s all-too-often high-handed approach to the environment, they invite us to rethink the way we impact it and to use art to forge new bonds with our surroundings.
“The first thing to do would be to strip space of all sentimentalism, all duty of signification, all psychological adjectivity, and remove its gender to achieve neutrality, defining space as something that has no narrative to recount and no sentiment to pass on”.
