Visions croisées

Listen to the conference on France Culture plus.
Patrick Javault has invited Sarah Morris, artist, on the occasion of her solo exhibition, Once a Thief at Air de Paris gallery.

For the past fifteen years or so, Sarah Morris has been directly involved in a twofold activity of painter and film-maker. Her pictures use the vocabulary of geometric abstraction made more complex by computer graphics, while her films are for the most part portraits of cities (Washington, Las Vegas, Beijing, Rio…) consisting of short shots and accompanied by a constant musical beat. These city portraits, like avant-garde documentaries, introduce a line of thinking about the entanglement of power and creation, and about the extreme exposure to which we are all subject. What is more, the architectures, signs, images and motifs discovered in the films nurture the paintings, as is illustrated by the recent series devoted to Brazil, which explicitly refers to Niemayer’s buildings. Sarah Morris is currently present twice over in Paris with a new show Once a Thief at the Galerie Air de Paris, and the presentation at the Fondation Louis Vuitton of Strange Magic, her new film, about Frank Gehry’s new building.
