Conversation between Camille Richert, Marie Preston and Io Burgard on the notions of collaboration and encounters, followed by the sale of the book.
In 2019 and 2020, a collaboration was born between the École supérieure d'art Annecy Alpes and Curiox - an art and meeting center in Ugine, Savoie, whose mission is to create a dialogue between heritage and contemporary creation. The collaboration between these two institutions was centered on the “Collapse of the Alps” research program: a project to document and reflect artistically on rock collapses caused by climate disruption. The program was based on an artist residency and partnerships with well-known art institutions such as the Institut d'Art Contemporain Villeurbanne/Rhône-Alpes, as well as local associations.
As part of this program, artist Io Burgard was invited to take over the newly-renovated former Church of the Fountains in Ugine. She has turned the large hall of the former church into her sculpture studio. From December 2019 to March 2021, works took shape there, along with meetings with Uginois and a bar: Le Grand Zinc, which lived on. In the context of the COVID 19 health crisis, the opening of Le Grand Zinc was an unexpected and unifying experience. Despite the “social distancing” measures, Io Burgard brought Ugine's punk past to life in the Eglise des Fontaines. This publication is an extension of that living memory.
“There's no better place to strike up a conversation than in a café. At the Palais de la bière, I was chatting with Crouton. A living memory of Ugine's glorious musical past. The town, on the road to Chamonix, is only known because you drive through it. A few weeks earlier, I'd been invited to visit because of its geographical location, said to be at risk. The Arly gorges are collapsing and the water overflows. The setting for my residency here was to respond to the research program initiated by ESAAA, entitled “Collapse of the Alps”. Devoid of barroom talk, I preferred the subject to its soundtrack; a movement still relatively alive, linked to this industrial town's past: punk.”
