Writer Jurga Tumasonytė will talk about the magical realism genre and reveal the behind-the-scenes of her writing. She will share illustrations of monsters and creatures she met as a child. What influences us in our childhood often comes out in our work, so the workshop will look for monsters from the participants’ childhood, from books, TV or other media. After discovering our own monsters, we will try to describe them according to the questionnaire.
Later on, Jurga Tumasonytė will talk about the peculiarities of creating characters and the principles of writing short prose. The monsters created during the workshop will appear in short stories created by the participants.
In the workshop session led by Théo Robine-Langlois, we are going to start from a roleplay manual to create characters, and hijack it. Every characteristic (power, endurance, intelligence) will be turned into monstrous adjectives (meanness, ugliness, perversion). Once those first questionnaires are filled, we are going to visually describe those characters, having in mind those who usually stay in the background of heroic fantasy stories: the characters associated with evil, such as ghouls, goblins, orks, banshees, or trolls.
After those “me-monsters” are established, we will embed them in a realistic and contemporary world – public transport, offices, streets, schools, etc. – and imagine their behaviors, reactions, and feelings. Let’s try and answer the question: what can our me-monsters bring to the world?
