Éloge du romantisme postmoderne

Wednesday 13 April 2016 at 7 pm

Michel Maffesoli chairs a debate with guests Marc Halevy and Stéphane Hugon to discuss the former’s latest work « Éloge du romantisme », Laurence Massaro, 2015.

Worlds apart from the materialism that still dominates official society, immaterial values are enjoying a new lease of life in what might be termed unofficial society. This, of course, is not without consequences for politics, the economy, and society as a whole.

Today’s highly aggressive form of progressivism, which has been a cause of devastation for much of the natural and social world, is making way for quite a different sensibility in which qualitativity and creativity take pride of place. Such was the beating heart of nineteenth-century Romanticism, and this is what the young generations are rediscovering for themselves today, leading to the emergence of a new symbolic order, a « sacral » ambiance, much of which has yet to be explored.
