Fiction / Performed readings #8

Monday 29 June 2009 at 7 pm

The last evening of the second season of this series features two performances and a film, all of which call into question the construction of a predetermined discourse and its validity.

The tandem Odile Darbelley – Michel Jacquelin will give « a short performed anthology of tangent literature ». The writer Olivia Rosenthal will present « La bête et la bête ISO 11784 », published bu Editions Coiffard* with images of Stéphane Thidet.. By way of introduction, Karol Pichler will unveil the result of an urban intervention in the streets of Rio staging ball jugglers and taking the notion of play on words literally.

* Book published for Estuaire Nantes < > Saint Nazaire 2009, a biennal event (2007-2009-2011).

BIOGRAPHIES

Olivia Rosenthal
Born in 1965 in Paris, where she lives and works.
Writer Olivia Rosenthal has published seven narratives (with Editions Verticales), three plays, several fictions for the radio, and more recently a sound play, Viande froide [« Cold Meat »], at the end of her residence at the 104. The recipient of the Prix Wepler in 2007 for On est pas là pour disparaître [« We Are Not Here To Disappear »], Rosenthal has developed, from one story to the next, a set of characters dealing with their obsessions and their anxieties, and often at odds with a world in which they never quite fit. Rosenthal also regularly creates and presents performances at various cultural events and festivals (Avignon, Manosque, Ménagerie de Verre and Théâtre de la Colline in Paris, Subsistances in Lyons, Lieu Unique in Nantes, Festival Actoral in Marseilles…).

Odile Darbelley – Michel Jacquelin
For several years the two artists have been thinking – with as much seriousness as derision – around the notion of « Art Tangent, » an art form that would have gone completely unnoticed in art circles without the « Fondation Professeur Swedenborg pour l’Art Contemporain, » whose mission is to reveal it to the public. Tangent Art, which began with the « Duchamp Duchamp » retrospective at the Avignon festival, has been the subject of collective exhibitions at the FRAC PACA and at the FRAC Alsace under the curatorship of the tandem, of a performance at the Frac Lorraine, and of an ephemeral preview at the Fondation Cartier… The tandem relish playing with the codes, concepts, and discourses of contemporary art, and their interventions are both funny and impeccable in their logic. Coming from plastic arts and theater, respectively, Jacquelin and Darbelley have been moving back and forth between the two in the past fifteen years, distilling in one what they create in the other. In 2007 they published a work of reference on Tangent Art (Actes Sud).

Karol Pichler
Born in 1957 in Bratislava (Slovakia). Lives and works in Rio de Janeiro.
Karol Pichler’s work lies at the crossroads of art, design, and performance. After some years spent in France, he currently lives in Brazil where he is developing a practice from within the Brazilian social and cultural context. Responding to the specificity of the local art scene, Pichler privileges spontaneous modes of intervention in the streets of the city, directly collaborating with the population. In a country dedicated to the cult of the body, he designed « Dieta, a social body intervention, » the daily results of his own diet sent through e-mail. For « Intervention urbaine nº1, » a recording of which is presented here, he invited the ball jugglers so typical of Rio to manipulate words.
