Discussion between the artist and Andrew Hodgson, writter and researcher
Following the screening of the video series O. Sorcery (works created 2019-2024), Laura Gozlan and Andrew Hodgson, writer and researcher, will discuss the contexts of the series' creation and deployment, the cultural objects that have inspired them, and the forms the videos take on resulting from this practice.
"Onanism Sorcery" follows the experiences and mutations of MuM, a recurring and solitary character played by Laura Gozlan since 2019. Navigating themes as varied as cosmetics and politics, MuM is part of a genealogy of monstrous female figures drawn from the genre of industrial film. Her operations result from a deviant use of trans-humanist technologies, revealing their archaic, occult sides. Her failures lead her to other, more oblique operations: the prolongation of youth through the inhalation of mummy vapors; self-engendering through onanism; political maneuvering through sexual magic and onanism. From episode to episode, her efforts with cosmetic procedures fail (MuM’s aging accelerates) and lead us elsewhere: she falls down the social ladder, and finds herself trapped in the margins.
O. Sorcery has benefited from the support of the CNAP in 2020.
