To mark the publication of LES RUMEURS DU MONDE, Repenser la confiance à l’âge de l’Internet (Worldwide Rumours: Rethinking trust in the internet age), documenting Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige’s research into internet fraud and scams, the Fondation d’Entreprise Ricard and the Villa Arson have organised a series of events, including :
– A presentation by the artists.
– A showing of their jointly directed film It’s all real/Tout est vrai (2014).
– A book signing by the artists and selected contributors to the work.
The book explores the phenomenon of spam email and internet scams. Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige present the vast corpus of material they have been collecting since 1999, focusing on how personal narratives are formed and the representations and modes of knowledge production embodied in the scams. The research is the starting point for a broader debate with intellectuals and authors on the nature of power and trust in a post-digital age. How has the internet transformed the concept of trust? And how do traditional belief practices inform the relationships forged between individuals on the world wide web?
The publication accompanies the exhibition JE DOIS TOUT D’ABORD M’EXCUSER… I MUST FIRST APOLOGISE… JOANA HADJITHOMAS & KHALIL JOREIGE, shown at the Villa Arson, Nice (6 July – 13 October 2014), Home, Manchester, UK (12 September – 1 November 2015) and forthcoming at the MIT List Visual Arts Center, Cambridge, USA (19 February – 17 April 2016).
