This Poetry Platform session proposes a meeting between two anthropologists, Eric Chauvier and Emmanuel de Vienne, who, despite dissimilar areas of study and analytical instruments, offer investigations somewhere between narratives, reports, interactions and different formats which question the narrative and fictional processes of language in its effects of authority, deficiency, and wit, too.

Eric Chauivier teaches at the Université Victor Segalen Bordeaux II and at the EHESS. His chosen terrain is the ordinary in contemporary societies. He has written in particular a series of books, published by Allia, encompassing narratives, reports, fragments and analyses whose point of departure is his professional activity, with special attention to situations involving the observation of human suffering.

Emmanuel de Vienne is a specialist in South American lowland regions. His research involves the Trumai, one of the groups of the pluri-ethnic and pluri-linguistic society of the Upper Xingu, in the Brazilian State of Mato Grosso. After studying  Trumai conceptions of illness, as well as humour, he is currently interested in the place of the new media and audiovisual technologies in the contemporary processes of cultural patrimonialization in these societies. In tandem he is working with Carlos Fausto on contemporary shamanism and prophetism. He is a lecturer at the Université Paris Ouest Nanterre La Défense, and is the author of several scientific articles, notably “Pourquoi chanter des ragots du passé? Itinéraire historique d’un chant ritual trumai”, in Journal de la Société des américanistes, 211.
