Laurent Jeanpierre

Laurent Jeanpierre is currently a lecturer in political science at the Political Research Institute of Strasbourg (Robert Schuman University). He co-manages the « Politics and Culture Management » major of the « Political and Social Science » Master. He taught art theory at the art school of the Annecy district community, and has collaborated to the following reviews: Art press, 02, Particules, Critique, Fresh Théorie, L’Inactuel.
Part of his research in the artistic field deals with the use of language in contemporary art.
Co-curator with Cyril Jarton of the Watchwords-passwords exhibition at the Espace Paul Ricard in 2005, he is interested in the political dimension of enunciation, and in the conditions of admissibility of the literary and artistic enunciations.
Another of his researches aims at defining the boundaries of several regimes of artistic practices that, in their own right, could be qualified as experimental, in spite of the inflationist use of this word, and in the perspective of redefining the hardcore of historical vanguards. This work, initiated like the previous one from a selective rereading of the situationist project, leads us to question the parallels and the differences between workshop and laboratory practices, and to reflect, beyond these specific places, upon the pragmatic and technical conditions of the renewal of the structures of practice, upon invention, and upon novelty.
To that effect, he takes part in this « Laboratory-Archive-Concept » research project, common to the art school of the Annecy district community, to the Contemporary Art National Studio of Fresnoy, and to the « Exhibition trades » Master of the Rennes II university.
With Elie During, he also temporarily moderates a web forum dedicated to the contemporary urban metamorphoses, belonging to the « Airs de Paris » exhibition at the Centre Georges Pompidou.
The subject of his sociology thesis at the EHESS, was the exile to the USA of the French artists and intellectuals during World War II. More generally, it touched on the issue of the connexion between geographical mobility and creativity, on the one side, and between innovation ability and politicization, on the other. It will be soon published in a shorter version at the Editions de la Découverte.
In social sciences, his current researches study the structures of the so-called idea market, the artistic and intellectual international migrations and their effects, the social function of scientific philanthropy, and the social use of social sciences, particularly as government techniques. Via each of these objects, the purpose of his research is to analyse, with the tools of an empirical and critical sociology, the contemporary intellectual globalization in its medium term, as well as certain specific and little-known structures of remote-controlled power.
