Working with video, sculpture and performance, Madison Bycroft currently focuses on forms of reading and writing, expression and refusal. The politics of illegibility and legibility are explored through language and materials, pondering how “meaning” is framed by historical contexts, prejudices and power structures. Madison Bycroft is interested in the way in which we might reimagine “reading” (in its broad sense) and understanding, not as an objective oriented towards accomplishment, but as a relationship that lingers and expands space: opaque, never reaching its destination, untethered and afloat. Here, floating is explored as a methodology of disorientation and a practice of pleasure that is not goal-oriented, but instead fractured, itinerant, abstract and planktonic.
