Sebastian Wiegand

Sebastian Wiegand was born in 1987 in Kiel, Germany. He lives and works in Berlin.
In his paintings, Sebastian Wiegand interweaves autobiographical elements, references to the history of art and literature, and direct social observations. Through this dialogue, he explores the contemporary possibilities of figurative and narrative painting. He is interested in the medium as a “container” for experience and its potential to comment on lifestyles, belief systems and political positions in Western societies. Born in Kiel in 1987, he lives and works in Berlin. Until 2015 he studied at the HFBK in Hamburg, the ÉNSBA in Paris and the Universidad Complutense in Madrid. In 2021 he co-founded the independent exhibition space Scheusal in Berlin with Rosa Joly. His work has been exhibited internationally, notably at the Kunstverein in Bielefeld, DOC in Paris, La Traverse in Marseille and the Kunsthaus in Hamburg. He is currently artist-in-residence at 99 Canal in New York.
