Les Mots troubles #2 / Telling voices

Wednesday 4 January 2023 at 7 pm

As part of "Les mots troubles" cycle organized by Julie Béna, this second meeting will be held with three guests: Clara Schulmann, Anaïs Tohé-Commaret and Virgil Vernier. The book "Zizanie" will be discussed and selected extracts from the films Virgil Vernier and of Anaïs Tohé-Commaret will be shown.

« In my performances, my writings and my films, I always try to give space to the voices. These voices are most often expressed through myself and they are always women's voices. Are we always the vehicle for the voices we want to make heard? How do we make the experience understood? Through the body? Is the body the voice?

I remember reading a text a long time ago, and the author said that the first thing you lose when someone dies is their voice.
I have experienced many deaths in my life and I have often thought about this. It seems to me that this author is right. So, do we want to recount these voices in order not to forget those who live or to make the missing ones remember?

When I read Clara Schulmann's Zizanies, I recognized these preoccupations of making people hear, of doing things together, by re-questioning the material of the writing. At the same time, there was also this desire to talk about voices through the image: how are voices made visible? How does filmic writing make them heard? This is what we are going to talk about with Virgil Vernier and Anais Tohé-Commaret around their filmic production. »
